Episode 604: Andy McCarthy built one of Australia’s leading Solar companies; what can we learn from the land Down Under?

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Statistically speaking, the odds of success for a formerly troubled teen launching a renewable energy company in the heart of Australia’s coal country are dubious, at best.

But Andy McCarthy was determined "to make money without making the world a worse place in the process."

So he relied on his ADHD-driven ability to hyperfocus and a natural curiosity to transform a business he started in his garage into one of Australia's largest solar companies.

"Every time I hit a roadblock, I found the smartest person I knew and badgered them with question after question — including many dumb, embarrassingly poor questions. I should have known better. It should have been obvious.

"But I had no idea what I was doing. I had no ego and admitted I didn't know the first thing about solar. I just wanted to get involved. And I think humility helps when you're not afraid to admit what you don't know," he said.

In today's podcast, Andy tells SunCast Host Nico Johnson the incredible story of determination and resilience that led to the creation of RACV Solar.

He successfully built a business in the Australian state of Victoria while igniting his sense of purpose and transforming his life. Today, he uses his own story to inspire the younger generation in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, proving renewable energy can energize people along with homes.

And now, after what he describes as 13 incredible years building his business, he's taking a six-month break — stepping down as CEO and Managing Director of RACV to spend six months traveling Europe and the Middle East with his wife Kelly and their three young boys.

He plans to return to the workforce later in the year in a consulting capacity, supporting business and government initiatives to accelerate the energy transition while continuing efforts to develop emerging new energy leaders, "paying forward the support I have enjoyed in my career."

It's one heck of a story, so nuanced and impactful that you won't want to miss hearing it in its entirety.

It dates to 2010 when Andy and his wife founded Gippsland Solar. "It unsurprisingly was located in Gippsland and did solar, so it was a very appropriate name. We were pretty clever," he said.

They overlooked its proximity to the Latrobe Valley and its historical interconnection with brown coal, which releases even more emissions than black coal. "Coal has had a tremendously powerful social license here for 60 or 70 years, so information about the energy transition was not very well received in 2010," he said.

Nonetheless, they persisted. In 2013, they opened a showroom in the small town of Mirboo North, embracing a community of just 2,000 residents.

Gippsland Solar continued to grow, chalking up a list of groundbreaking achievements and a portfolio of record-breaking projects along Australia's eastern seaboard.

Beyond business success, Gippsland Solar earned community acceptance. Collaborating with government entities and local councils, it showcased a path forward through renewable energy and ecological stewardship.

Embracing diversity as a catalyst for innovation, Gippsland Solar fostered a workforce reflecting various countries, indigenous heritage, and backgrounds. Equal opportunity programs created an inclusive environment, embodying Andy's belief in the positive impact businesses can have on society.

The commitment extended beyond operations, with the Gippsland Solar Community Fund supporting important initiatives with over $1 million in sponsorships and in-kind donations. Those investments enriched the region, benefiting food banks, neighborhood houses, wildlife shelters, and drought relief efforts.

Andy revealed the personal toll of running a rapidly growing business, sharing a vulnerable moment of panic and exhaustion. It was a wake-up call to develop a more sustainable and resilient business model that could thrive without his constant involvement.

It put the company in a better position for an acquisition, which paid off in 2019. That's when RACV, an established organization with more than $5 billion in annual revenue, acquired Gippsland Solar to gain a foothold in the clean energy space.

"At the end of the day, acquisitions are all about bringing the people along on the journey," he said, emphasizing the significance of people in mergers and acquisitions and their role in the business's ultimate success.

Andy said connecting with people also helped him recruit former coal workers to the renewable energy space. While "a lot of skills are transferable," he said it's more about "identifying with people and just backing them in," empowering them to develop and contribute to the business.

Andy sprinkles humor, humility, and insights throughout the conversation and emphasizes the importance of storytelling and community engagement in gaining support for renewable energy. He refers to his ADHD diagnosis as a superpower, noting it strengthens his ability to harness his unique traits and capabilities.

Andy's story inspires young individuals facing difficulties and seeking a brighter future and leaves listeners with valuable advice on humility. He emphasizes recognizing what you don't know, seeking guidance, and continuously learning from others.

Join us to hear more about his entrepreneurial journey and what you can achieve through passion, perseverance, and a commitment to sustainability.

Episode 603: Powerful Tactics for Customer Relationships, with Darryl Parker of CEA

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

In today's fast-paced business landscape, empathy has become a crucial element of effective customer communication. Darryl Parker, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in high-tech manufacturing and power electronics, firmly believes that empathy is the key to creating a strong foundation of trust and understanding with your customers. By genuinely acknowledging and addressing their concerns, you show that you value their perspective and are committed to their success. We will explore the significance of empathy in customer interactions, highlighting how it allows you to understand your customers better, align with their goals, and forge long-lasting partnerships.

The Importance of Empathy

Darryl Parker, with over three decades of high-tech manufacturing and power electronics experience, emphasizes that empathy is the key to effective customer communication. By showing genuine empathy for your customers' concerns, you create a foundation of trust and understanding. It's crucial to ask your customers about their concerns, actively listen, and delve deeper to comprehend the impact of those concerns on their business.

Understanding Your Customers:

To truly understand your customers, it's essential to qualify their concerns and ask targeted questions. By doing so, you gain insight into the decision-making process within their organization. Ask who will make the final decision and how different stakeholders fit into that process. Some may be recommenders, while others provide data or have a direct influence on the success of the project. Understanding their roles allows you to align your efforts with their goals and ensure their success.

Aligning with Customer Goals:

When engaging with customers, it's vital to focus on making them successful. By asking how they are measured and what success looks like to them, you demonstrate alignment and dedication to their objectives. While this may seem straightforward, it is often overlooked. Aligning with your customers' aspirations shows that you genuinely care about their well-being and helps build a long-lasting partnership.

Listening to Your Own Listening:

During customer interactions, it's easy to fall into the trap of formulating your responses while the other person is still talking. Instead, focus on active listening. Allow the conversation to guide itself based on the customer's needs and concerns. This demonstrates that you are genuinely interested in solving their problems and not solely focused on pitching your product or service.

Applying Empathy at Every Level:

Empathy is not limited to complex sales processes. Whether you're a door-to-door salesperson or a high-level executive, empathetic listening is equally valuable. By understanding the customer's perspective, you can effectively address their needs and forge strong relationships, regardless of the scale of the project.

Conclusion:

Developing empathy for your customers is a powerful tool for success in the solar industry. By genuinely understanding their concerns, roles, and goals, you can align your efforts to help them achieve success. Remember to listen actively, resist the urge to formulate responses prematurely, and let their needs guide the conversation. By applying empathy at every level, you'll build lasting customer relationships and contribute to the growth of your solar business or career.

Nico Johnson turned a passion project into his life's focus — rapidly evolving the first podcast for solar energy in emerging markets to a go-to resource for anyone interested in the renewable energy space. In just under eight years, he's transformed SunCast into an important roundtable for industry leaders from startups to corporate giants.

It’s laudable that the show has achieved this milestone of Episode 600, a significant step toward his goal of 1,000 episodes. Yet, success has not always been guaranteed for SunCast as Nico disclosed that he worked on at least half the published episodes in the hours after midnight, underscoring his unwavering commitment to a passion project that eventually became his main focus.  Still, with more than 750,000 listens over the past 7+ years, Nico and his guests have clearly found a message that resonates with a faithful and attentive audience.

Yet, Nico remains humble, crediting luck and consistency more than that which is most evident to those who know him: his arduous work ethic & peerless network.

"There are those out there who have said to me and others in my presence, 'SunCast is the number one podcast in the industry' or 'Nico is the top podcaster.' Ironically, while I'll nod and smile, neither is true," he said.

"I've just found ways to build rapport, learned how to build and leverage a strong network, and focused on maintaining authenticity. Those things matter."

He claims his goal is less to stand out than to motivate others to chase his success. "I want people to see SunCast and say, 'If Nico can do that, then so can I,'" he said.

During a wide-ranging conversation with guest host Sean Tanabe, a fellow traveler and expert in the renewable power industry, Nico speaks from his heart about the SunCast journey. Many themes emerge, ranging from dedication, consistency, and mentorship to growth challenges, accessibility, and the impact of saying no.

"Consistency is key," Nico said, explaining how he established regular rituals as vital factors in producing engaging content.

He affirmed his long standing belief in embracing each incremental gain, working steadily, enjoying the luck that finds you, and, most importantly, keeping going. "As I say at the end of each show, ‘showing up is half the battle,'" he added.

Nico opens up about his approach to podcasting, likening it to preparing for a marathon. He meticulously structures his week to accommodate recording interviews while working full-time, a system that ensures consistent output.

Inspired by podcasting mentor John Lee Dumas, Nico shares his motivation behind SunCast — to provide a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences in the solar industry, making it accessible to all.

Feedback has played a significant role in shaping Nico's hosting style. One intriguing aspect discussed is the term "solar warrior," borrowed from a UC Berkeley professor. While some perceive it as too aggressive or masculine, Nico thinks it aligns with creating an inclusive identity within the solar community.

"The feedback around 'solar warrior' helped me catalyze my thinking around what it looks like to build a tribe. People need something to identify with. And I've had so many people — male and female — come up to me and say that they identify as a solar warrior," he said.

Sean noted SunCast podcasts have an outsized impact, particularly Episode 325 with Gregg Dixon, CEO Of Voltus. Nico reflects on the significance of these stories and their alignment with the purpose of SunCast, as well as the importance of making the show's content more accessible and searchable to reach a broader audience to help people understand the vast opportunities within the clean tech industry.

Nico names his "boardroom" of influential figures — from entrepreneur Seth Godin, the late industrialist Andrew Carnegie, Jon Bonanno (Episodes 146 and 153, Dan Shugar (Episodes 39 and 57), (Episodes 120, 335, 414 and 500), Bill Nussey (Episodes 125, 135, 387, 407, 421/422 and 499), and Jigar Shah (Episodes 60, 134 and 458).

Nico acknowledges the significant impact of female leaders in the industry, such as Emily Cohen (Episode 579), Emilie Wangerman (Episodes 312, 313 and 410), Katherine Hamilton (Episode 598), Mary Powell (Episode 450) and Michele Magee (Episode 388).

Behind the scenes of SunCast lies an unsung group of heroes — the dedicated team contributing to its success. Nico highlights the importance of his team and acknowledges the past and present team members for their invaluable contributions.

The conversation delves into the evolution of the solar industry and its unique challenges. Nico highlights how the industry has transformed from infancy into a credible, trillion-dollar sector that's made its way to its teen years, "ready to go off to college. Right? There's a lot we still don't know. But we've got a firm foundation."

Where does Nico go from here? As the industry grapples with growth and evolution, Nico will explore new video content creation and educational pathways for listeners. He understands the need for short-form content and the use of artificial intelligence to curate and catalog the abundance of information available.

But whatever the method, Nico is committed to maximizing his contributions to the industry and maintaining his role as a true "solar warrior" in the fight against climate change.

As the interview nears its end, Sean, drawing from his experience at Peak Power, stresses the increasing importance of storage and solar in the future, particularly in the wake of California's implementation of net energy metering (NEM) 3.0.

The fascinating conversation between Sean and Nico encapsulates the growth and challenges of the solar industry, the evolution of SunCast, the importance of educational pathways and short-form content, and the imperative to maximize contributions while recognizing transferable skills.

It is a testament to the power of vision, consistency, and making choices aligned with personal values and goals. The conversation inspires listeners eager to embrace the clean energy revolution and unleash their inner solar warrior.

Join us to hear how Nico succeeded and navigated challenges and what you can learn from his experience.

Episode 599: How To Effectively Clear The Way For More Renewables Investment And Deployment, w/Nexamp’s Zaid Ashai and DWS’ Priscilla Lu, live from MWSE ’23

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Paving the Way for More Renewables Investment and Deployment

In early May, I had the unique opportunity to host not one but two industry experts live in a fireside chat style conversation from the stage of the Midwest Solar Expo in Chicago. In a wide-ranging conversation, we cover how we can work more effectively with corporate investors, policymakers, and utilities when growing solar and storage beyond the few strong markets we’ve all been focused on the last few years.

First I speak with Dr. Priscilla Lu, Managing Director at Deutsche Bank DWS Asset Management Sustainable Investments Group, to glean what industry leaders can learn about meeting the needs of corporations investing in sustainable solutions. Then I connect with Zaid Ashai, CEO of Nexamp, one of the country's largest solar and storage developers, to discuss exactly how we can more effectively forward solar deployment through targeted discourse and political engagement.

Make it easier for corporates to invest in renewables in America

Dr. Lu reminds us that many corporations are interested in decarbonizing their carbon footprint and that our industry can help them channel investments that accomplish and support the expansion of renewable energy.  Not only are they showing strong interest, but many have established mandates that are driving their decarbonization efforts.

But it’s not just internal corporate mandates forcing more sustainable decision-making with these corporate halls.  Outside the US, the impact of stringent global policies on local solar and energy storage development is palpable, especially in Europe. There, suppliers are required to disclose energy consumption associated with fossil fuels, and these policies force action and compliance throughout the supply chain, not just in the EU, but also those who supply those EU companies from the US and elsewhere.  Dr. Lu highlights that this reality is “creating an opportunity for corporates to channel investment in the US.”

And Priscilla doesn’t want us to miss out on these opportunities.

As leaders in the industry, we can push our government to take a more proactive role in actually helping developers, financial bankers, and leasing companies report the valid and verifiable data needed to determine the investment viability of large-scale renewables projects. Currently, Priscilla explains, investors and asset managers are having trouble gaining access to information in a uniform and accessible manner.

Specifically, she urges developers to qualify and “tokenize” their assets so they can be more accessible to financial investors. This includes securitizing an asset in a blockchain so that it's immutable. In essence, she’s asking developers to commoditize the accessibility and transparency of these projects to investors.

Build a groundswell of support for solar

Zaid Ashai of Nexamp urges developers and advocates to fight the fights around how renewables are viewed by the public. We must have better talking points about how we are delivering value, particularly to government officials on all levels. Go beyond creating jobs, tax revenue, and securing returns, to focus on how solar and storage are creating long-term value and resiliency and impacting national security.

He also talks about taking proactive action as an industry. Zaid describes developers who don’t call out misinformation from utilities about solar and storage because they are afraid to antagonize utilities when they have projects in the queue. There are numerous ways we, as an industry, could improve our collective voice and strengthen the messaging around the value solar and energy storage provide on a local level. We simply must do more, lest our voices get drowned out by those who wish to see renewable energy delayed and stalled.

Zaid points to community solar as a great model for driving value to each customer and therefore building that support in a very concrete way. He explains that this powerful, custom-centric “fourth vertical” is one that energy subscribers love, corporates can embrace, and innovators and entrepreneurs can use to begin their decarbonization journey.

Build a business that promotes effective engagement and equitable solar deployment

“Have a great mission that your employees can be a part of and feel passionate about,” Zaid tells me. For Nexamp it’s about serving customers, doing the right thing, and promoting social equity in their marketing, hiring, subscribership, and more.

Also, “reshape the dialogue so that utilities are partners.” Spend time at the C suite with utilities asking, where can we help? Help them perceive DERs as a boon and learn to work with new business models so we can move the distribution level past its current choke point. Zaid urges industry companies and associations to host utility leaders of the future and teach them fluency in technology like smart inverters, storage, and demand response.

Zaid also talks about working on political engagement on a local level to push past state and federal level loggerheads and find those broader, nuanced talking points that appeal to a more vast electorate, like red districts.

“Because most of us are here to create a better future.”

Check out my entire interview with Priscilla and Zaid to learn more about what we can do to clear the way for renewables investment and deployment.

Episode 598: Katherine Hamilton on Bridging Technology & Clean Energy Policy

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Katherine Hamilton wants to ensure we use all our available tools — technology, smart business models and public policy — to create a desire and a will to move forward on climate change.

It's a broad and practical perspective from a renowned entrepreneur and clean energy advocate with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Katherine is the chair and co-founder of 38 North Solutions, an 11-year-old Washington, DC-based public policy firm. With expertise and experience in clean energy, entrepreneurship, the environment, sustainability, technology, and venture capital, it helps clients navigate market and policy challenges and opportunities.

Katherine said 38 North has a unique ability to merge an understanding of policy and business to advance an organization's economic success and mission.

"Something we're really good at is getting to the nut of the problem and determining what we need to do to solve it," she said.

38 North works with everything from pre-Series A startups to multi-national corporations. "You find folks who say, 'I have this great invention, it's really cool, it's going to solve this incredible problem, and everybody should buy it.' And yet, they aren't," she explained.

38 North closely examines each company's mission and spends time with its leaders to understand its objectives, identify barriers to success, and determine policies it would be beneficial to influence. Katherine compared it to repeatedly solving unique puzzles, each requiring technical knowledge and practical communication skills to convey complex ideas to policymakers.

As she explained, policymakers generally lack the imagination to grasp the possibilities of new and disruptive technologies. Educating them improves their ability to accept new ideas and understand how their actions can support the latest innovations.

38 North typically educates policymakers about unfamiliar areas and presents existing policies, such as investment or production tax credits, in broader or different contexts. She said providing them with relatable examples and helping them connect the dots between the new and the familiar help to bridge gaps — a crucial aspect of its work.

Katherine has a way with words and a record of action.

In April, she was named a non-executive director of Glasgow, Scotland-based Smarter Grid Solutions, an enterprise energy software company with a unique end-to-end approach to Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) to deliver net zero energy systems.

It's the latest of numerous appointments and accomplishments for the former co-host of "The Energy Gang" podcast. Katherine credits that opportunity for increasing her credibility and opening doors to global engagement through organizations like the World Economic Forum.

She is one of kWh Analytics' #Solar100 Thought Leaders, received a Cleanie Award as Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018, regularly contributes to industry journals, and mentors aspiring energy leaders.

A native of Virginia, Katherine has a multigenerational tie to energy. "My grandfather worked for the power company — he just called it The Company — and he always had aspirations all of [his grandchildren] would become engineers," she recalled.

"I was an engineer, but only by training, not education. But my dinner table conversation was very different because my father (John Heil) is a professor of philosophy," she explained.

Her dad often asked Katherine and her brother to solve logic problems before he excused them from the table.

"My mother was very much of a homemaker when I was in my formative years. And she was the engineer in the family. She did everything; she could do anything. And she taught me — you cannot even imagine all the stuff I know how to do because of my mother," Katherine said.

Interested in hearing more about what Katherine knows and the things she can do?

Katherine discusses her experiences working at Virginia Power (now Dominion), starting with a summer job at the company's headquarters in Richmond.

She worked on a technical writing project but later decided to pursue a career in writing and illustrating children's books. In search of opportunities, she became an au pair in Paris and gained a degree there. Returning to the United States, she took a job at a law firm before eventually joining the power company as a service representative.

As a service representative, she designed electric service for customers in Alexandria, Virginia, which required knowledge of vaults, transformers, duct banks, and drainage systems — and supplemental night classes in engineering.

While at the power company, she witnessed the need for innovation from load growth and high-rise building construction. The company had to be creative and implement standby generation rates, thermal energy storage rates, and other approaches to meet increasing demand.

The utility industry has changed significantly since then, with more technologies and tools available. She believes utilities can benefit from advancements in technology and public policy and should partner with their customers by providing access to their energy use data.

Join us for today's podcast to learn more about how she continues to shape the clean energy landscape with her extensive experience, international policy expertise, and dedication to a greener future. Oh, and did we mention her first interaction with the White House, where she innocently sent a package mistaken for a bomb? You'll have to listen to hear the story.

Episode 597: Community Solar’s meteoric rise, with Arcadia’s Kiran Bhatraju live from MWSE’23

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

New Ways To Engage From A Solar Market Insider

With more than 15 years of experience in developing clean energy solutions, Kiran Bhatraju has a view of the market and its potential that is long and deep. Kiran founded Arcadia to offer innovators and consumers greater access to the data and clean energy they need to fight climate change. His insights on what we can do to forward solar growth should not be missed.

Below are three actionable takeaways from my recent interview with him at the Midwest Solar Expo.

Address public policy and market making to successfully grow solar

Clean energy businesses must devote time to public policy and market making.

Kiran tells me that Arcadia’s policy team works in tandem with their business development team because the future of clean energy is intimately tied to how states and cities respond. Almost 20% of their sales and go-to-market budget is devoted to market development.

“If you’re a developer not applying some amount of funds and effort engaging lawmakers, you’re doing the business a disservice.”

Clean energy businesses can activate millions of prospective solar customers to be proponents for expanding caps on solar so policymakers see that demand is there. “We're building projects and there are big pipelines. Customers want this, and I think policymakers need to continue to hear that,” he says.

Ultimately, Kiran believes that when you’re in clean energy, you must understand that you are the expert, someone that state legislators and PUC staff should be going to in order to understand exactly how projects get installed and how customers want things structured.

Actively forward the narratives that push clean energy

Have conversations with utilities, lawmakers, and consumers that forward renewables growth.

The biggest impediment is the incumbent utilities looking to protect the status quo. But Kiran suggests we shouldn’t let that stop us. Utilities look at community solar and other models and ask “Who owns these projects? Why are they on my grid?” And that, Kiran says, is the battle we all fight. The way to push back is to make the point that, at the end of the day, customers want our products.

“The utilities effectively are the platform, and that platform needs to be unlocked to allow us to install our projects and do the work we want to do.”

Lawmakers need to be engaged as well. They have to hear the narratives that counteract those of 1.0 energy from fossil fuels, the ones that say renewables don't work and community solar is dangerous because it brings unbridled growth.

Kiran states that as a company or individual looking to take civic action to forward clean energy you can approach your local lawmaker or their staff and tell them: “Here's what I do. Here are my products. Here's why consumers love them. And here are some of the challenges.”

Finally, consumers want clean energy, but it can be confusing. Simplify it so the value proposition is clear. Businesses and residents need to understand that renewables are superior to the incumbent because of benefits like resilience, clean energy, and economic development.

Kiran uses community solar as a potent example. It’s a market with enormous potential that needs conversations that help people understand it: “I’m going to be paying less, and I don’t have to do anything. No construction, no power plant to put on my roof.” We should stress that this lower rate comes without a contract or credit check. It’s just simple, easy access for lower and middle-income communities that have been left out.

“This is an unassailable message.”

Leverage your technology platforms to disseminate clean energy messaging

Think about how to use technology platforms to communicate messages. Tech can make it extremely simple to reach state legislators and public utility and public service commissioners.

Kiran points to several examples. When supportive legislation was being considered in Virginia last year, Arcadia created a prepackaged push-a-button for prospective customers to reach out directly to the Public Service Commissioner and tell them they wanted solar. Another time, when a utility failed to publish PDF versions of data Arcadia activated some of their customers to change that. Arcadia also uses tech as part of its strategy to uncap markets for growth, like in Maryland and Illinois.

“We are coming of age as an industry. And as this happens, we are realizing the kind of power we have. We can move the entire populace toward a more equitable distribution of electricity, something that is a right for all of us in modern society.” I couldn’t agree more.

Listen to my entire interview with Kiran to glean more inspiring insights about growing renewables from a true industry insider.

Episode 596: How Google empowers climate innovation

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

If I could give you $10 million to spend to create a more sustainable world, how would you invest it? That's just one of the intriguing questions SunCast Host Nico Johnson and Bodhi CEO Scott Nguyen debate with three expert panelists on today's intriguing podcast.

You'll hear from Mark Tomasovic, principal at Energize Ventures and two Google executives, Caroline Golin, global head of Energy Market Development and Policy and Sonal Somaiya, Sustainability Investments and Corporate Development, for a wide-ranging discussion on tackling climate change through investments and technology.

"There's just so much energy, enthusiasm, and knowledge in the climate area. But the awareness of how to be involved is relatively low, and we try to address that in today's broadcast," Scott said.

You’ll hear about:

  • The Need for Skilled Labor: Mark highlights the shortage of skilled labor, specifically electricians, to support the electrification of infrastructure in the US.

  • Spreading Awareness: Sonal emphasizes the importance of spreading awareness about climate technologies and advancements to individuals outside the climate space.

  • Individual Actions: The panelists suggest practical steps that individuals can take to address climate change.

  • Career Paths in Climate Tech: Panelists recommend students gain experience in startups to develop a diverse skill set or volunteering for political or policy campaigns.

They also address the impacts of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IRA) — what one panelist called the most influential piece of legislation in the history of America.

So what would our panelists do with $10 million? Caroline would improve carbon trading registries "so people could understand the carbon footprint of their operations." She stressed the importance of measuring because "we can't fix what we don't know," highlighting the need for accurate data to address climate change.

In another part of the discussion, Mark commented on how climate tech and energy startups struggle with lengthy pilot periods. "Pilots are where startups go to die," he said.

He explained that selling climate software or hardware differs from selling regular enterprise software because the customers focus on minimizing risk due to the high-stakes nature of their operations. Startups can find themselves in extended pilot periods, which can be resource-intensive and time-consuming.

And Sonal added that understanding the dynamics of selling climate software is crucial. Entrepreneurs should focus on building an ironclad case for how their technology can drive cost savings and fulfill demand. She emphasized the need for honesty in communicating the unique dynamics of the market and aligning the go-to-market strategy with the buyer's needs.

Today's show is a replay of our special Earth Day live broadcast featuring Google and Bodhi, a software platform that helps growing residential solar companies remove operational headaches and sell more to more people.

Join us as our panelists share practical ways individuals can support the energy transition, emphasizing collective action, informed decision-making, and increased awareness.

They encourage individuals to live the change they want to see, engage in conversations with others, and stay updated with climate-focused technological advancements.

If you enjoy actionable strategies and think you'd enjoy participating in an engaging pop quiz on climate threats and the impact of rising CO2 emissions on global temperatures — well, this podcast is for you.

Episode 595: The DOE's Path To Implementing Enduring, Equitable Clean Energy

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

In today’s Tactical Tuesday Nico and Matt Abele of the Squeaky Clean Energy Podcast sit down with three Department of Energy officials to get an exciting, behind-the-scenes look at how to build enduring, equitable institutions that forward the clean energy transition.

We speak with Chris Castro, Chief of Staff for the recently created Office of State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP), Anna Siefken, Senior Advisor for the Office of Technology Transition (OTT), and Dr. Henry McKoy, Director of SCEP.

Here are three key takeaways from the episode.

Create institutions that transform communities for the long-term

Chris Castro of SPEC wants to create something that lasts. In our interview, he explains that “SPEC is about establishing a foundational office that will live for decades to come and support states, tribes, and communities to drive this clean energy forward.” From meeting the needs of LMI communities and transitioning public infrastructure to fomenting strategic partnerships, Chris digs into the nuts and bolts of delivering results that impact as many Americans as possible for as long as possible.

Anna Siefken is all about pushing boundaries in a way that “fills the gaps.” She tells me that the OTT identifies barriers to market adoption for new tech and pushes as many technologies into that window. Anna speaks of asking the kinds of questions that move forward as many things as possible: “How do you raise the floor? How do you bring the best products into the market and how do you actually accelerate those technologies?”

For his part, Henry identifies a key marker of success for SPEC when he looks back in five years: “we were successful in making sure that this funding went out to all these communities” in a way that made lasting change “without fraud and waste.” He and his department are driven by the desire to create long-term stability in the country’s neighborhoods and benefit the folks who have been historically disconnected from the clean energy movement.

Provide the assistance needed to actually capitalize on opportunities

Our guests talk about having a level of engagement that ensures communities are actually set up to adopt decarbonizing solutions.

Henry describes how SCEP has developed features that will make accessing its $16 billion in funding less intimidating. His department is introducing more prizes as well as publicly accessible blueprints and vouchers that lower the barrier to entry regarding funding applications.

Chris talks about the next level of engagement, one where SCEP goes above and beyond being a grant manager. He explains that they need to provide communities with technical assistance so they can use the money effectively, particularly for organizations that don’t have a sustainability director or energy manager. He says to help them answer the question, “Where am I along this journey of clean energy, and how do I tap in?”

Anna does something similar on a global scale. Recently, named as the US delegate to Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation, she is able “to engage with additional stakeholders on the international stage” to forge public-private partnerships and the bilaterals between governments that actually move things forward in key areas.

Keep an eye on equity

When I mention that Chris’s work serves as the connective tissue between players driving the clean energy revolution, he agrees. He adds that the overarching intention is to deploy the benefits back to the communities in an equitable manner, something “unconventional for government.” A key step, Chris says, is focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion so you have a department staffed in a way that “looks like America.”

Henry talks about SPEC’s drive to “lift communities up” and connect historically disadvantaged communities. They are working to structure their processes in a way that ensures that those who need help the most can get it, allowing for greater equity in the DOE’s push to decarbonize America.

Strategies we need today

Our three guests lift the curtain behind the DOE to reveal folks working hard - and very deliberately - to build accessible and equitable entities that can be pillars in the clean energy transition. Given the unpredictable nature of climate tech and clean energy deployment these days, I believe it’s vital that we use strategies like these to make the kind of change that lasts.

Check out the entire episode for more on this plus a host of insights about how the DOE is re-imagining itself in the wake of the recent game-changing legislation.

Episode 594: Sollega Racks up Wins With Unique Flat-Roof Solar Solutions, with CEO Elie Rothschild

594: Sollega Racks up Wins With Unique Flat-Roof Solar Solutions, with CEO Elie Rothschild

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Elie Rothschild is the founder and CEO of San Franciso-based Sollega, a commercial flat-roof PV solar racking manufacturer. Sollega has a unique approach to solving universal issues in a solar niche famously known for low margins and intense competition.

A solar racking system is the foundation that holds a solar array in place. Elie and his team describe racking as the marriage of solar and roofing because it has to meet the needs of both industries.

Sollega mounting systems minimize on-roof assembly, install quickly and maximize available roof space, reducing mounting and installation costs associated with solar arrays.

Elie started the company in 2008 to find an easier way to install solar panels on notoriously frustrating commercial flat roofs. "Flat roofs are never flat," he said. "There are undulations and all kinds of obstacles you have to work around. Every roof is a challenge and has its own circumstances."  He borrowed from a novel approach to solving this problem in other sectors and invented a molded plastic racking system that minimized both the metal and the weight on C&I Rooftops while reducing the shipping costs and logistics as well.

In today's podcast, Suncast host Nico Johnson talks to Elie about the innovation and ideation that went into creating Sollega's products and the entrepreneurial grit fueling the company's steadfast presence in a fiercely competitive environment.

Elie capitalized on an opportunity to upend conventional metal solar panel mounting systems by testing alternatives, including polymers typically used for roofs and their components.

There’s a reason they use those materials on roofs. They’re extremely durable, have excellent UV resistance, and don’t corrode,
— Elie Rothschild

Elie took a chance and earned rave reviews when he unveiled a blow-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) prototype at a trade show in 2009. "So we went back to the drawing board, revised our designs, retooled, and that's how we got our start," he said.

Elie credits Sollega's first large customer, Walmart, for helping it achieve product-market fit.

Sollega's racking systems are notable for their flexible design, which can handle undulations in roofs, work around obstacles, and are compatible with the most common solar panels today. "I think of us as an engineering, R&D manufacturing, sales, and marketing company," he said.

He emphasizes the importance of innovation and partnerships, citing Sollega's successful collaboration with Iron Ridge, another US-based manufacturer. "We have to keep innovating, and we have to keep finding ways to provide value to our clients and excellent service.," he said.

In today's podcast, Elie shares insights about his company, the impact of his midwestern childhood, and the personal journey that took him from Wisconsin to California. He's a solar veteran with more than two decades of experience, a serial entrepreneur and a thoughtful guy with a wife and two children that we're sure you'll enjoy getting to know better.

Episode 593: Insights into the Untapped Opportunities of Commercial and Industrial Solar with Tim Montague

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

While the residential solar market often steals the limelight, Tim Montague believes that the C&I solar sector holds immense potential, especially in the context of sustainability and the built environment. With an annual capacity of a couple of gigawatts in the US alone, C&I solar presents significant growth opportunities for those willing to embrace the challenges and learn the ropes.

As Tim readily acknowledges, the C&I solar sector is not for the faint of heart. Navigating the complexities of technical knowledge, sales skills, and regulatory understanding, along with handling lengthy sales cycles and multiple decision-makers, can be daunting. However, he encourages solar professionals not to shy away from these challenges but to embrace them as opportunities for growth and development.

In this interview, we tease out the initial spark that led Tim to make a career shift into the solar industry. From an energy fair in New Mexico as a boy, to his deep involvement in the clean energy transition in Illinois, Tim’s passion for sustainability and solar are more than skin deep.  Tim also shares some excellent advice on how he has been able to accelerate his knowledge in the solar industry, especially within the challenging C&I sector.

Over the course of his journey, he’s become a go-to expert for C&I development. To support professionals seeking to excel in the C&I solar market, Tim has created two training courses available on HeatSpring – one on qualifying commercial solar leads and projects, and another on selling and developing C&I solar projects.

By sharing his knowledge and experiences, Tim aims to fill the gap in resources available for professionals interested in C&I solar. I believe that, along with Tim’s podcast (where his co-host is also a C&I expert), these courses can help you overcome the challenges of this sector more effectively.

I share Tim's optimism about the potential of C&I solar. The vast, untapped rooftops that we see when flying into and out of metropolitan airports remind us of the immense possibilities that lie ahead. The clean, reliable, and virtually perpetual energy from the sun is just waiting to be harnessed by those willing to take on the challenge.

If you're looking to expand your skillset and explore new opportunities in the C&I solar sector, Tim's HeatSpring courses are an excellent starting point. Let's grow solar together, Solar Warriors!

Episode 592: EPRI's Arshad Mansoor on Resiliency as the Crucial Factor in Sustainable Energy Systems

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Before we can successfully reduce our carbon footprint and transition to a low-carbon economy, we need to ensure that our systems are resilient enough to cope with the impacts of climate change. Otherwise, even minor disruptions or disasters will undermine our efforts to decarbonize, leaving us vulnerable to more severe consequences.

As Arshad Mansoor, president and CEO of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), eloquently stated at the recent University of North Carolina Clean Tech Summit, "Resiliency is the tip of the spear to get to decarbonization."

Founded in 1972, EPRI is an independent, nonprofit energy research and development organization that collaborates with more than 450 companies in 45 countries.

Arshad has been with the organization since 1999, holding a succession of roles of increasing responsibility. His goal is to help shape the future of clean energy.

EPRI has been doing that for 50 years. But with climate change accelerating, its role is growing increasingly complex not to mention essential, he noted.

Arshad said electricity needs to stay on during the coldest and hottest days of the year even as power systems, the climate and customer expectations change over the coming decades.

During a keynote on the second day of the summit, Arshad spoke about "A Climate-Ready Power System." In his speech and in a subsequent interview with SunCast Host Nico Johnson, he made a case for resilient and affordable decarbonization.

"We are already clearly seeing evidence the weather is changing. Now 1-in-100-year extreme events happen every year. Whether you believe in climate science or think the climate is a natural cycle, the power system, the grid — the marvel of the last century — was built based on the weather we expected in the last century. We've got to retool and develop a new grid ready for tomorrow's weather," he said.

Last year, EPRI launched a three-year initiative called the Climate READi: Power (REsilience and ADaptation initiative), which brings together global thought leaders and industry stakeholders to develop a common framework to address this challenge.

Arshad said we could comprehensively enhance resiliency — on the infrastructure and on the customer sides — if we work smart, fast and thoughtfully.

He knows his stuff: He holds five U.S. patents in power electronics and distributed energy resources, and he has published numerous papers in journals and conference proceedings, given talks, and participated in panels at leading technical forums worldwide.

Want to learn more? He’s got valuable insights to share and we invite you to join us for today's podcast.

Episode 590: Dominion Energy Plans to Become the Most Sustainable Energy Company in the US, w/Bob Blue, CEO of Dominion

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Dominion Energy Chair, President, and CEO Robert "Bob" Blue believes renewable energy is the future — and said as much in his company's most recent Climate Report

He doubled down on that prediction at the recent University of North Carolina Clean Tech Summit, stressing Dominion's commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Dominion projects that under every set of assumptions modeled, solar energy will become the mainstay of its electricity generation fleet by 2040.

During an opening keynote addressing "Roadblocks to the Clean Energy Transition" and subsequent interview with SunCast Host Nico Johnson, Bob stressed Dominion's plans to become the most sustainable energy company in the country.

In today's podcast, Bob explains how Dominion is throwing off the mantle of a stodgy utility to become a leader in the energy transition.

"We do our work on the environment because it's the right thing to do," he said. "We comply with all environmental laws and regulations, but we understand that our customers want us to go above and beyond."

Richmond, Virginia-based Dominion is one of the largest regulated electric utilities in the United States, servicing more than 7 million customers in 16 states.

Blue has a vision of a cleaner, greener future, but it's grounded in business realities, and he made that perspective clear.

Some think cutting carbon-based energy sources is impossible, and any attempt to do so will destroy the economy, he explained. Others believe the transition carries no cost — no trade-offs or complex decisions.

"Both of these perspectives are flawed," he said. "We can achieve net zero. But to do so, we need to roll up our sleeves and make big decisions."

He said the energy transition hinges on three factors:

  1. Reliability — "We're not going to leave our customers in the dark or the cold. As we retire fossil-fired units, we must ensure other power generation sources are available to pick up the load."

  2. Affordability — "New solar farms cost money, and new wind farms cost money. Every new power line connecting solar and wind generation to homes and businesses costs money, particularly during high inflation. We must consider the effect on our customers in the near and long term."

  3. Regulation — "There is a risk that customer energy needs and the push for the clean energy transition are happening more quickly than the required infrastructure can be realistically permitted and constructed."

Bob embraces reforms to the permitting process to make it easier for utilities to develop clean energy projects. "We need to work with regulators to speed up the process," he said.

Still, he's optimistic and emphasized Dominion is "leaning forward" on clean energy to address what its customers want.

Dominion has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40% since 2005, is on track to meet its interim targets for reducing emissions by 2030 and is "well-positioned" to achieve its net-zero goal by 2050, he added.

Bob noted Dominion received top ratings for climate and water security from the CDP, a not-for-profit charity whose global disclosure system helps investors, companies, cities, states and regions manage their environmental impacts. Dominion earned "A" grades for its disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks and best practices.

"It's external validation that what we're doing is working, and we need to keep it up," he said.

Bob said Dominion continues to engage with communities on solar projects and is expanding investments in offshore wind and renewable natural gas — biogas produced from organic waste.

"We're upgrading our grid, making it more robust, more resilient, smarter, better able to handle the intermittent, sometimes bi-directional flow of renewable energy," he said.

"These technologies hold tremendous promise in helping our company and industry reach our goals. But it takes people to develop the technology, and it takes people to build, install and operate the technology. And as technology advances, the need for high-performing individuals willing to learn increases," he said.

He said Dominion recruits from the "broadest and deepest" talent pool possible. From 2017 through 2021, the company grew its workforce diversity by 10% and intends to continue that progress.

If you've ever wondered how traditional utilities will fare in the coming decades, tune into today's podcast. Bob shares many interesting insights about how he's evolving a regulated utility to take a more prominent role in a new generation of power sources. You won't want to miss it.

Since joining Dominion in 2005, Bob has held a succession of services and operational executive roles. He became CEO and president in October 2020 and chair of the company's board of directors in 2021.

Earlier in his career, he was a counselor and director of policy for Virginia Governor Mark Warner and an attorney at Hogan & Hartson. He holds a BA and MBA from the University of Virginia and a JD from Yale Law School.

Episode 589: Developing Large Scale Projects by Nurturing People & Providing Opportunities

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

It’s an exciting time to be involved in the renewable energy industry, and Kimberlee Centera is eager to share her experience of what it was like starting out when solar was just beginning to gain momentum in the early 2000s and how the lessons she’s learned along the way have given her great success in all areas of her life.

Kimberlee emphasizes the integral role of networking, mentorship, and relationship-building. To succeed in the renewable energy industry, she believes it’s crucial to form beneficial and meaningful links with the right people. By networking and connecting with industry experts, CEOs, mentors, and job contacts, Centera explains that you can open up opportunities, co-create nourishing environments, and build invaluable knowledge.

As CEO of TerraPro Solutions, Kimberlee talks a lot about her experience in handling risk management appropriately. Renewable energy projects are long-term investments, but part of what makes them successful is the availability of seasoned risk management strategies. By having a robust risk management plan kept in place, Centera stresses that progress can be made more assuredly and with greater stability.

Kimberlee walks us through best practices used for working with developers to ensure success. She emphasizes the importance of "perfected site control," which requires ensuring the right landowners, land rights, and documentation are in place. She highlights issues like securing transmission right of way and addressing subordination of existing liens, which are critical for project financing but often overlooked.

“We looked at a 30-mile transmission line that had probably every kind of ownership you could have from state lands to tribal lands, to federal lands, you know, public agencies, private individuals, and so there's a very complex strategy that needs to go into acquiring that, and then perfecting it.”

TerraPro Solutions help clients through the process of initial site control, executing and recording documents, navigating parameters of site control, finding the right landowners and project partners, as well as financing which includes a long list of necessities.

“Most of the time these things don’t align, but we can fix those issues.”

Looking towards the future of the renewable energy industry, Kimberlee sees several trends emerging, such as increasing demand for early-stage work and pivoting. A lot of companies are now using diversification and agility to expand their energy portfolios, and Centera believes this is a great way for companies to remain responsive and flexible to changing conditions.

Overall, Kimberlee emphasizes the importance of networking, mentorship, risk management, relationship-building, and being forward-thinking and prepared for the future. By taking the opportunities available, asking the right questions, and having the availability to receive, she believes that anyone can succeed in the renewable energy industry.

Bonus Episode: Introducing the Climate Avengers

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

The world is facing an existential crisis. Climate change poses a threat to our very existence, and if we as a society fail to build a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable future, it will be due to a failure of imagination and courage. The good news is that the climate tech sector has been growing rapidly in recent years, with over $200 billion invested so far. However, trillions more will be needed to save our planet from hitting three degrees Celsius.

The question then becomes, who will drive this change? Who are the entrepreneurs and investors that will display the courage to fund these innovations? These are the questions that Elena Foukes and her team at Climate Avengers aim to explore.

The goal of Climate Avengers is to demystify the capital-raising process for founders and help more investors understand how to source, do diligence, and think about investing in startups in the climate space. By doing so, they hope to unlock more capital going to the private tech sector.

One of the key ways to achieve this is by increasing the number of female investors, which generally leads to more investment into female-founded companies and different types of ideas that get funded and built out for the world. This is a critical step in ensuring that the climate tech sector is inclusive and diverse and that we tap into the full range of human potential to address the climate crisis.

Elena Foukes, the guide, and host of Climate Avengers has an impressive background in the climate tech sector. She has worked at companies like P G and E, co-founded and led a climate tech company called Utility API, and scaled global operations at Tesla, where she received praise from Elon Musk himself. Her experience in both the traditional and startup sides of the climate tech sector gives her a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

Through her interviews with entrepreneurs and investors, Elena hopes to showcase the stories of those who are making a difference in the fight against climate change. These are the people who are being the change and saving the planet, all while making money. By telling their stories, Elena aims to inspire others to get involved in the climate tech sector and help build a sustainable future for us all.

In conclusion, Climate Avengers is an exciting new venture that has the potential to unlock more capital going to the private tech sector, increase the number of female investors, and showcase the stories of those who are making a difference in the fight against climate change. If we are going to build a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable future, it will be because of the imagination and courage of people like Elena Foukes and the entrepreneurs and investors she interviews.

Bonus Episode: (Introducing Factor This!) Distributed Energy Is A Massive Undervalued Market, with Tim Hade, Co-founder Scale Microgrids

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Today’s episode is a Bonus Episode, shedding light on another podcast(er) that we think is providing great insights on hard-hitting topics such as the Auxin trade case and generally covering complimentary stories from compelling corners of the solar business.  Enjoy!

“Our grid is falling apart. Wildfires, floods and more frequent extreme weather events routinely highlight the imperative of a distributed energy future not just for resiliency but to reach our climate goals.” Tim Hade, COO and Co-Founder of Scale Microgrids shares his knowledge with John Engel on today’s SunCast episode.

These gentlemen discuss the biggest question facing the distributed energy market-  how fast is this going to happen? Will we have implemented a distributed energy market that supports our societies and the environment quickly enough?

Join them as they discuss the role of distributed energy for the grid of the future, the perils of scaling, a climate tech hardware companies journey, and what's holding back the Inflation Reduction Act. Tim goes on to inspire us with his personal story of how being in the military got him into climate advocacy work, and reminds us that the Department of Defense has looked at climate change as being a predominant long term national security threat for about 25 years.

You’re going to want to hear Tim’s five tips for starting a clean energy company, as he has experience of starting a company and scaling it to a larger entity.

“We were pretty early adopters of the thesis that solar and storage were going to be the backbone of distributed energy moving forward.”

“We think distributed energy is a massive market that's undervalued, and that solar storage is going to be the hub of the systems that build out that distributed energy network. That was sort of the premise for Scale Microgrids.”

Some other hot topics in today’s episode include optimism around dtrs, bottom up momentum, identifying the biggest challenges within the industry, importance of tax equity monetization in clean tech, and the significance of team effort.

“Ultimately, this is a team game, right? You’ve got to surround yourself with people who compliment you but also address your weaknesses.” Join us by listening to today’s episode to soak up Hades knowledge and gain inspiration for your own personal journey in the renewable energy industry.
