Episode 754: Is This Renewable Energy’s Hidden Bottleneck? Ben Macias Explains

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

One of the major bottlenecks in the renewable energy sector is tied to one of the oldest components of the energy grid and is an essential piece tying FAR More of our energy infrastructure together than most realize - the humble transformer. As more renewable energy projects are deployed, transformer shortages delay projects and create significant challenges for grid expansion.

Ben Macias, Chief Revenue Officer at MGM Transformers, brings over a decade of experience in the energy sector. Previously, he led sales at Shoals Technologies, where he was instrumental in that company's tremendous growth story and eventual IPO. Now at MGM, Ben oversees efforts to tackle transformer shortages by expanding production capacity and enhancing efficiency. Ben has a seasoned team focused on solving this industry bottleneck, and this conversation with Nico gives a glimpse into the not-so-sexy-but-necessary world of electromagnetic induction, probably not a topic you thought you’d learn about today! It’s helpful to know that in the many Gigawatts of projects Ben & his team at Shoals helped facilitate, this was always among the most surprising areas of bottlenecks holding projects (and factories, and much more) back from completion.  He and the MGM team, with nearly 50 years’ experience in all types of transformer technology, are focused on fixing this shortcoming and doing it with American-made products.

Expect to learn:

  • How MGM is expanding capacity with new facilities in Texas.

  • The difference between wet and dry transformers and their applications.

  • Why transformer technology has remained largely unchanged for decades.

  • The importance of building a dream team to support customers.

Episode 750: Clean Energy as a Wealth Creation Vehicle, Gilbert Campbell | Volte Energy Utility

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

Environmental justice is definitely an area that I’m passionate about because it’s deeply entwined with racial justice. Communities of color have been disproportionately victimized by environmental hazards, discriminatory environmental policy, and are far more likely to live in areas with heavy pollution.

At Volt, we are trying to reverse these injustices by building clean non-polluting solar plants in our communities.

Episode 749: 45X-tra things to worry about with Battery Storage in 2025

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

The battery storage sector is [finally] stabilizing with 90% of the IRA tax credit rules now in place, providing developers more clarity and perhaps more certainty. However, domestic production, financing, and evolving tax credit policies still pose challenges, particularly to product development. As developers, you must contend with government policies, geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and safety concerns, all of which can delay projects and affect their long-term viability. And battery suppliers/manufacturers are all sorting out the wants versus the needs of developers as the market gets increasingly crowded & pushes the envelope on size & density.

In a recent live discussion, Fluence President John Zahurancik addresses these complexities, highlighting efforts to expand U.S. battery production and improve safety through rigorous fire safety testing.

Expect to learn:

  • How storage wasn’t traditionally driven by policy, until the IRA & 45x, but policy is now reshaping storage projects and driving domestic production.

  • Why 4-hour storage systems are most common and what’s needed to advance longer-duration technologies.

  • What is the potential impact of the upcoming election on renewable energy and trade policy.

Episode 748: Scaling Energy Storage: Why Bigger Isn't Always Better | Andy Tang, Wärtsilä

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

The energy storage market is truly moving faster than ever, and with it, the complexity of building and managing these projects and products that serve our need for 24/7 renewable power.  It does, however, raise a number of interesting, if not troubling questions:

How does this rapid change impact the Total Cost of Ownership for battery energy storage projects?
Are there hidden costs to this pace of growth?

As we watch the industry scale, it has started to feel a bit like companies are rushing projects (and products) to market in a race to meet market demand and be “first” in a number of key areas, not the least of which is power density and battery size.

So we have to ask, “how big is too big?”

And, as sites begin to move closer to population centers, what do we do about the inevitable concerns surrounding noise ordinances?
Is Noise the next challenge in front of the industry?

I asked these and many others of today’s special guest while we were live on our PowerUp Live stage recently at RE+ 2024.

With over 12.5 gigawatt-hours of contracted storage systems, including 8.5 gigawatt-hours already in operation, Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimisation (ES&O) is rapidly expanding its global footprint across key markets, from the US and Canada to Chile, the UK, and beyond. With the market moving faster than ever, Wärtsilä is tackling both technical and logistical challenges, ensuring that its battery storage systems are ready to meet demand.

Andy Tang, Vice President of Wärtsilä ES&O, brings nearly two decades of expertise in battery storage and grid edge development to the table. And in our conversation, he addresses head on the impacts of rising energy density on Total Cost of Ownership (TCOE) and the hidden costs associated with larger, more complex systems.

Expect to learn:

  • Whether the race to greater energy-density batteries is really “good” for the market.

  • The emerging challenge of noise and how Wärtsilä is addressing it through advanced design and site planning

  • Tang’s advice for procurement managers in vendor & product selection.

The challenge you have though is many of these solutions have not been designed by integrators. So you know, what does an integrator do? Well, an integrator understands the total system, every individual component.
— Andy Tang
Storage is encroaching into distribution and not only is it encroaching into distribution because of of lack of sites, but it’s also increasing into distribution because of the move towards resiliency, and really the ability for networks to build at the grid edge, and so noise is absolutely becoming a really big factor.

They’ve got grid code interconnections that they have to deal with. There’s so many external elements. We have to be a nimble company and deliver what they’re looking for, which is why we want our product suite to diversify at this point.
— Dave Hebert
And so as we get to these larger enclosure sizes, where it is difficult to free up an inverter and shuffle those modules into existing areas on your site, you then have to divert to alternative augmentation strategies that might open yourself up to handling modules in the field.

Episode 742: Mosaic’s Journey to $15 Billion in Residential Solar Loans with Founder and Executive Chair of the Board, Billy Parish

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

When I started SunCast, it seemed like there were lots of “Pioneers”; I even did a series focused on Solar Pioneers.  That was 9 yars ago.  Nowadays, most people are following playbooks others have written, and true pioneers are few-and-far-between. But I do still get to bring real pioneers on the show.  Today’s guest has taken all 9 years to lock down, despite having first met Billy Parish in 2011, fully 4 yrs before I started SunCast! Good things come to those who wait.  And you’ve waited a long time for this story, as Never Before Told…The Billy Parish, Mosaic Anthology!

How does a social activist unexpectedly become a pioneer in solar financing, helping shape the industry while funding over $15 billion in residential solar loans?

Billy Parish, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Mosaic, turned his passion for activism into a mission to make solar power accessible and affordable for millions of homeowners. Before founding Mosaic, Parish was a youth activist and impatient budding entrepreneur.  His first real breakout success was Energy Action Coalition, a youth-driven climate movement, which laid the foundation for his work in clean energy. His work brought him international acclaim, including being a Rolling Stone Climate Hero and Mother Jones Student Activist of the Year, all while he was “taking time off” from Yale!  When he turned his focus to solving solar energy’s finance & scalability problem, little did he realize it’d turn into a nearly 2-decade journey, much naysaying, and a few ‘pivots’. Nevertheless, through Mosaic's innovative financing models, they have empowered thousands of contractors and funded billions in residential solar loans - and in many ways, it seems they’re just getting started.

Billy traveled from his residence in Berkeley, CA, to Washington, DC, to sit down with Nico and share his journey, insights, and Mosaic’s standout innovations. One of Mosaic’s major achievements includes launching the first 20-year solar loan product and a fully digital point-of-sale system credit application process that revolutionizes solar financing. Parish explains his "theory of change," focusing on making clean energy accessible to all through engagement and equity—a journey that earned him a feature in Rolling Stone for his climate leadership.

Expect to learn:

  • Billy Parish’s blend of activism and entrepreneurship as a driving force for opening solar as an accessible asset class to millions.

  • Mosaic’s shift from crowdfunding to institutional investors, scaling to $15 billion in loans.

  • Mosaic’s innovations in digital infrastructure that makes solar financing fast and easy for homeowners.

  • Why U.S. solar installations take months, and how Mosaic is working to cut delays.

  • How tools like SolarAPP can save thousands per project by speeding up solar permitting.

Listen now as Nico finally gets to deeply connect with one of Solar’s widely-accepted iconic pioneers, Billy Parish.

My perspective is one of service. So this is after installation. I’m not trying to sell systems to people. I am maintaining them, either fulfilling the warranty of the company I work for, or taking sites that the installer has gone out of business and they don’t have anybody to service their solar, and it’s not working.

I think where the technology is taking us is to where all those systems need to be able to work together in an intelligent fashion, where they’re communicating together, and they’re making decisions together.

Right now, everybody is focused on storage. This is the next big hurdle we gotta hop across. And I think the second we do, when we solve the storage problem, I think it’s gonna be huge.

Episode 736: How To Build Substations For Renewable Energy In Record Time: Dan Girard’s APG Success Formula

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

One of the most common critical path bottlenecks of any infrastructure project, energy or otherwise, is the transformer and substation. The interconnection of the power plant to the electrical grid requires this hardware - and it’s famously hard to come by these days, with lead times often in excess of 18 months.  If you’re involved in renewable energy, in particular EPC services, you know the pressure to deliver projects faster than ever. Dan Girard, CEO of Alternative Power Generation (APG), shares how his team consistently outpaces peers and large competitor, often building substations in under six months—compared to the typical 18-24 months.

Girard also reveals APG's focus on the underserved 1-50 MW solar market and their extensive experience with microgrids, offering valuable insights into how APG meets the complex demands of data centers, utilities, and more.

Expect to learn:

  • How APG builds substations in less than six months, cutting lead times in half.
