About the Episode:

Domestic manufacturing is making a COMEBACK!

There, I finally admit it. I never thought it’d happen, to be honest, as you’ll here in today’s episode.

On August 8th, we were invited to Houston, Texas for the grand opening of SEG Solar's new solar module factory. In the heart of oil & gas country, this state-of-the-art facility raises the bar for domestic solar manufacturing. With fully automated production lines producing two gigawatts of panels annually—and plans to expand to five gigawatts by 2030, SEG Solar is leading the charge in bringing manufacturing back to U.S. soil.

If you’ve not been inside a real solar manufacturing facility, neither had we - we take you INSIDE for this unique first-hand look.

And, if you haven’t yet, subscribe to SunCast Media & watch the factory tour.

About the Episode:

Many of our regular listener energy nerds are aware that the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Programs Office (LPO), under the leadership if Secretary Granholm and Jigar Shah, has evolved from a near-dormant entity with just one loan in the previous administration to committing over $31 billion to projects across critical clean energy sectors like hydrogen, storage, solar, EVs, Carbon sequestration and more. With an expanded pipeline of 209 applications requesting $281.1 billion in financing, the LPO is driving innovation and growth in the clean energy sector, and we’re even seeing a veritable rebirth of the Nuclear industry here with Vogle 3 & 4 coming online as well as the Palisades plant in Michigan coming out of retirement!

Jigar Shah, as Director of the LPO, has engaged 6,500+ organizations, ensuring the energy transition is private-sector led and government-enabled. And the sheer numbers in the results are eye-opening. In particular, the support for the nearshoring of our critical manufacturing infrastructure.

Episode 742: Mosaic’s Journey to $15 Billion in Residential Solar Loans with Founder and Executive Chair of the Board, Billy Parish

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

When I started SunCast, it seemed like there were lots of “Pioneers”; I even did a series focused on Solar Pioneers.  That was 9 yars ago.  Nowadays, most people are following playbooks others have written, and true pioneers are few-and-far-between. But I do still get to bring real pioneers on the show.  Today’s guest has taken all 9 years to lock down, despite having first met Billy Parish in 2011, fully 4 yrs before I started SunCast! Good things come to those who wait.  And you’ve waited a long time for this story, as Never Before Told…The Billy Parish, Mosaic Anthology!

How does a social activist unexpectedly become a pioneer in solar financing, helping shape the industry while funding over $15 billion in residential solar loans?

Billy Parish, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Mosaic, turned his passion for activism into a mission to make solar power accessible and affordable for millions of homeowners. Before founding Mosaic, Parish was a youth activist and impatient budding entrepreneur.  His first real breakout success was Energy Action Coalition, a youth-driven climate movement, which laid the foundation for his work in clean energy. His work brought him international acclaim, including being a Rolling Stone Climate Hero and Mother Jones Student Activist of the Year, all while he was “taking time off” from Yale!  When he turned his focus to solving solar energy’s finance & scalability problem, little did he realize it’d turn into a nearly 2-decade journey, much naysaying, and a few ‘pivots’. Nevertheless, through Mosaic's innovative financing models, they have empowered thousands of contractors and funded billions in residential solar loans - and in many ways, it seems they’re just getting started.

Billy traveled from his residence in Berkeley, CA, to Washington, DC, to sit down with Nico and share his journey, insights, and Mosaic’s standout innovations. One of Mosaic’s major achievements includes launching the first 20-year solar loan product and a fully digital point-of-sale system credit application process that revolutionizes solar financing. Parish explains his "theory of change," focusing on making clean energy accessible to all through engagement and equity—a journey that earned him a feature in Rolling Stone for his climate leadership.

Expect to learn:

  • Billy Parish’s blend of activism and entrepreneurship as a driving force for opening solar as an accessible asset class to millions.

  • Mosaic’s shift from crowdfunding to institutional investors, scaling to $15 billion in loans.

  • Mosaic’s innovations in digital infrastructure that makes solar financing fast and easy for homeowners.

  • Why U.S. solar installations take months, and how Mosaic is working to cut delays.

  • How tools like SolarAPP can save thousands per project by speeding up solar permitting.

Listen now as Nico finally gets to deeply connect with one of Solar’s widely-accepted iconic pioneers, Billy Parish.

My perspective is one of service. So this is after installation. I’m not trying to sell systems to people. I am maintaining them, either fulfilling the warranty of the company I work for, or taking sites that the installer has gone out of business and they don’t have anybody to service their solar, and it’s not working.

I think where the technology is taking us is to where all those systems need to be able to work together in an intelligent fashion, where they’re communicating together, and they’re making decisions together.

Right now, everybody is focused on storage. This is the next big hurdle we gotta hop across. And I think the second we do, when we solve the storage problem, I think it’s gonna be huge.

Episode 736: How To Build Substations For Renewable Energy In Record Time: Dan Girard’s APG Success Formula

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

One of the most common critical path bottlenecks of any infrastructure project, energy or otherwise, is the transformer and substation. The interconnection of the power plant to the electrical grid requires this hardware - and it’s famously hard to come by these days, with lead times often in excess of 18 months.  If you’re involved in renewable energy, in particular EPC services, you know the pressure to deliver projects faster than ever. Dan Girard, CEO of Alternative Power Generation (APG), shares how his team consistently outpaces peers and large competitor, often building substations in under six months—compared to the typical 18-24 months.

Girard also reveals APG's focus on the underserved 1-50 MW solar market and their extensive experience with microgrids, offering valuable insights into how APG meets the complex demands of data centers, utilities, and more.

Expect to learn:

  • How APG builds substations in less than six months, cutting lead times in half.

  • The keys to thriving in the 1-50 MW solar market and why it’s an underserved opportunity.

  • The ins and outs of microgrid design, including real-world applications and challenges.

  • How strong supplier relationships help APG secure critical components faster than competitors.

  • Why customization and agility are essential in today’s energy landscape.

This episode provides a clear look at the practical strategies that keep APG ahead of their peers, from dramatically reduced lead times to customized microgrid solutions. Dan is a seasoned industry expert who offers practical strategies you can apply to your own projects.

Episode 734: From Google’s Moonshot to GM’s Vehicle-to-Everything | Lessons in Innovation from Ty Jagerson

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

How does an idea go from concept to lab, from lab to field, and finally attract massive capital investment? What can a decade of business building behind the iron curtain in post-cold-war Eastern Europe teach you?

Ty Jagerson has spent his over 25 years executive career launching and growing businesses at Xerox (PARC), SolFocus, Google X, and most recently General Motors. His work at Google X, on Tapestry-the Moonshot Factory project, focused on overcoming the data bottlenecks that hinder the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar and electric vehicles into the grid. Long before he spun novel technology out of PARC (you might have heard of SolFocus?) he was learning the ropes in Ukraine and Russia exporting space tech, in the 90s!  Throughout his career Jagerson’s work reflects a relentless pursuit of integrating renewable energy into the grid, all while navigating the high-stakes, competitive landscape that he likens to the "Hunger Games" of the energy industry.

You’ll discover:

  • The long arc of innovation and how it often takes (7 to 14 years!) for technology to really become commercially viable.

  • Insights into how corporate environments may not always be the best incubators for innovation but can serve as safe havens for developing ideas from external sources.

  •  The importance of industry "scar tissue" and how past failures contribute to future successes.

  • Insights from Ty’s work at Google X and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) at GM on integrating DERs.

Listen in to learn how one iconic clean energy pioneer, Ty Jagerson, navigated the challenges of integrating DERs with the grid, offering critical lessons for entrepreneurs striving to innovate and succeed in the energy sector.

Episode 732: What’s Really Stalling Solar’s Momentum? Insights from Sunnova’s CEO

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

Despite more capital coming into the solar industry than ever before, healthy unit economics, rising utility rates, and even declining equipment costs, equity and debt instruments are trading at distressed levels, with working capital increasingly scarce. What's causing this disconnect, and how can the industry recover?

John Berger, Founder and CEO of Sunnova, is a veteran in the energy market with over two decades of experience. His company is one of the largest solar installation companies in the world, so it’s safe to say he has a privileged view from inside the industry. In today’s conversation, Berger discusses the pressures facing the solar industry, including regulatory hurdles, rising interest rates, and the perpetual whipsaw of the capital markets. He sheds light on how Sunnova is navigating these headwinds, as well as his thoughts on the path forward for the solar revolution.

John spoke with Nico about:

  • Why, despite strong solar economics, capital markets are still lagging.

  • Sunnova’s response to this high-interest rate environment.

  • The importance and impact of domestic content on the solar supply chain.

  • Berger's predictions on how the upcoming elections could affect the industry.

This conversation answers a lot of questions about the current state of solar in capital markets, so hit play!

We’re headed towards a revolution, and what I mean by that is the technology is increasingly going to deliver cleaner, less expensive, more reliable power to consumers and the current regulatory structure, yes the utilities are standing in the way, but eventually what ends up happening is the consumers rise up, and they’re also these consumers are called voters, and they get what they want, which is cheaper, more reliable, cleaner power.

I think at the end of the day, you know what the IRA is going to look like is Obamacare, which the Republicans scream and yell and hate on it, but at the end of the day, when they’re asked to vote against it, they’re like, well I’m not doing that. It’s too popular for my constituents.

Episode 731: The BESS Book: A Cell to Grid Guide to Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems with authors Drew Lebowitz & Swetha Sundaram

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

I have been looking [and waiting] for this book for years.

And if you’re in Utility-scale battery storage, I’m going to boldly suggest that you have too.

The wait is over, as the most comprehensive compendium on utility-scale battery energy storage is finally on shelves (or it was, it’s about to sell out!)

Looking to expand your knowledge of utility-scale batteries and the evolution of solar+storage and standalone battery projects? Whether you're a developer integrating batteries into your solar projects, an engineer trying to wrap your head around which technology to spec, or a layperson trying to stay ahead of industry trends, The BESS Book: A Cell to Grid Guide to Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems is the book for you.

Hear from the book's authors, Swetha Sundaram and Drew Lebowitz, as they draw from their extensive experience in energy storage engineering to provide what I believe is likely the most complete attempt to map the battery energy storage landscape A-to-Z. With deep expertise gleaned working for leading engineering firms like DNV and RWE, they’ve crafted a comprehensive resource that covers the full lifecycle of utility-scale battery projects—from cell chemistry to financing the projects and workforce to build these plants at scale.

Discover:

  • Why Nico believes this is the battery storage manual every engineering department should have on-hand.

  • The latest advancements in lithium-ion battery technology, illustrated with real-world case studies.

  • The key technical and financial aspects of [nearly all] utility-scale Li-ion BESS.

  • Critical considerations for integrating batteries with solar and wind projects.

  • Essential instruction on safety, environmental concerns, and industry standards compliance.

  • And so, so much more

Grab your copy of The BESS Book and listen in to gain the insights you need to lead in the energy storage industry.

NOTEWORTHY QUOTEs:

So we start with cell, we move to module, to rack, to system, the system encompassing everything else, not just within the container that has the battery, but also on your project site, everything from interconnection to the civil work to you know how you are actually laying out these systems and controlling them and building them.
— Drew Lebowitz
There’s so much inter-exchange that goes on. So that in itself is a great reason for this book, because even if you are in the storage industry, there’s always things that you don’t know, there’s gaps you could get filled in on.
— Swetha Sundaram

Episode 727: A Simple Logistics Improvement Worth Billions To The Solar Industry, Philip Schwarz of PVpallet

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

Have you ever considered the environmental impact of the non-solar components we deploy in the solar industry? It’s good that we generate clean energy, and even better that we quantify the embodied energy of things like the solar panels we use.  But, it takes a relatively “dirty” and old-fashioned industry to actually deliver those solar modules - logistics.  And, one of the lowest-common-denominator, least-thought-about products in the logistics toolkit is a century-old ‘technology’ made of wood…the pallet.

While essential for transporting solar panels (among millions of other products), these pallets contribute to significant waste (over 6,000 pounds of wood waste per megawatt); they also emit on average about 8kg of CO2 per unit! Millions of wooden pallets end up in landfills each year.  Worse still, the breakage of solar panels during transport costs the industry billions. This overlooked issue impacts both profitability and sustainability, reducing the overall positive impact of the clean energy sector's green footprint.

During his 15 years in the solar industry, Philip Schwarz has witnessed the waste, costs, inefficiencies, and safety issues associated with using wooden pallets. Inspired by a napkin sketch from his original co-founder, Philip went all-in on the potential for reusable packaging in the solar industry. The resulting company, PVpallet, has grown to become the industry’s leading provider of reusable packaging solutions.

There are numerous lessons to be learned throughout this conversation:

  • The novel engineering behind their reusable pallet design

  • How PVpallet uses reverse logistics and recycled materials to improve customers’ ESG scores

  • Why product innovation is a costly endeavor, and how they almost lost it all

  • The underlying economics that make this product make sense (and why people are still resistant to change)

Queue up this innovator’s story if you’re looking for inspiration to help you build your dream.  By the way, Philip has also built a great culture and is Always looking for good people. ;-)

NOTEWORTHY QUOTEs:

We’re literally throwing millions of pallets into landfills every single year and that problem is only growing with the industry.
— Philip Schwarz
Just do what you say you’re gonna do. Yeah. And that’s so simple. But it’s so poignant and so important.
— Philip Schwarz

Episode 726: Community Solar: Renewable Energy At A Discount Everyone Can Afford; Aviv Shalgi of Solar Simplified

We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: www.ratethispodcast.com/suncast

About the Episode:

You might think of community solar as a “Groupon for your energy bill” - you get discounted access to clean energy without needing to install solar panels, and leverage the buying power of a group purchase!

Aviv Shalgi, CEO and co-founder of Solar Simplified, is dedicated to expanding the reach of community solar. Solar Simplified acts as an aggregator, linking subscribers with solar project developers. And as the industry grows, the role of aggregator plays an ever-increasing part in helping folks who ordinarily can’t go solar (shade issues, don’t own your home, or a myriad of other reasons) plug into the sun…virtually. How is Aviv helping change how solar is built, bought and bartered?

In this episode, you’ll discover:

• The vital role of clear communication and building trust in advancing community solar

• The need for better risk-sharing models and industry standards

• How aggregators ensure the success and growth of community solar

• How aggregators manage billing protocols with utilities and ensure regulatory compliance

Learn how Solar Simplified fills the gap by connecting customers to community solar projects.

NOTEWORTHY QUOTEs:

The way that we like to explain community solar to subscribers is that they don’t actually buy this power, they buy a Groupon.

Unlike any other product that’s out there right now in the country, this is a guaranteed savings product. It’s highly regulated by state governments, by the federal government, by so many different agencies that we literally cannot charge you more.
