300 - SunCast 300th episode with Adam James, Part 1

300 - Adam James Pt1.png

SunCast 300th Episode

Welcome back, Solar Warrior! It’s a very special day as we’ve reached our 300th episode, and I could not be more thankful to you.

The story that you're going to hear today takes us back to the very beginning. Mr. Adam James was the first interview guest here on SunCast, and he’s back to celebrate this important milestone with us.

It is a distinct honor to bring him back now for his third appearance here on SunCast. In that time, Adam has risen to the position of Chief of Staff at Energy Impact Partners, which is a nearly $700MM dollar strategic venture investment fund focused on sustainable energy.

Adam is going deep down the rabbit hole of how he helps to run this very impactful fund in our industry, as well as a little baby of his called the Clean Energy Leadership Institute, upon which he sits as a board chair and as Co-Founder of that nonprofit, which empowers young professionals in clean energy.

Our conversation will be a 2-part episode

Adam and I rambled on for about an hour and forty-five minutes, so we're going to split that up into two episodes. This is part 1, where Adam and I go down memory lane to discuss what was the world economy like and the CO2 levels back in 2015 when we launched SunCast.

On part 2 coming out next Tuesday, we get really deep into Adam’s daily routine, how he manages his calendar, and how he manages his schedule. Adam kind of gives all about how he balances a family of three and being the effectively right hand of the CEO of this major venture fund. It's a wide-ranging but very fun conversation. I hope that you'll stick around and enjoy it.

Welcome back, Solar Warrior!

Welcome to another Tactical Tuesday, a short-form conversation with subject-matter experts designed to give you practical tools, tips and advice for building your solar business or career.

Today we have a repeating guest, Jesse Grossman, Co-Founder & CEO of Soltage. We already had Jesse on the show in episode 283, where we dropped the replay of the webinar we had back in June: Solar Project Finance & Acquisitions in the Post-COVID Era.

The webinar included valuable insights around not only how Soltage has grown to be one of the leaders in developing solar assets in the United States, but also advice and insight from Jesse’s 10+ years since the last recession.

Today, we’re going to drill down on one of the topics that came up during our last episode: how to support and empower developers through the development cycle into the disposition of the asset-selling process, and how to do it not only to build their business but YOUR business as well, in case you are a company bringing asset finance and deep market knowledge.

Welcome back, Solar Warrior!

It’s Thursday and I’m honored that you’re joining me for another amazing look into the life and career of a solar founder and CEO. What do the Chicago Bears, United Airlines, and the solar industry have in common? Well, the particularly quick mind, feet, and contributions of today’s guest. Eric Peterman, the CEO of GRNE Solar has such a transformative and interesting story.

Eric and I knew each other preparing for a Midwest Solar Expo panel that you’ve probably already heard. If you haven’t, I invite you to go back and listen to that one about O&M.

Eric impressed me and I had to get to know more about his story, and is such a classic and interesting grassroots story about grid, determination, overcoming odds, and sticking to it.

285 - Andrew Birch, Co-Founder of OpenSolar on Digitizing 20 years of solar expertise

285 - Andrew Birch.png

Happy Thursday, Solar Warrior!

How did one of the solar industry’s true pioneers take everything he’s learned about solar in the last 20 years and make it Free and open-sourced to the world?

Andrew Birch, Co-Founder of the first company to deliver online solar designs, tells us what his research suggests is the answer to scaling solar by 30% per year through 2050 to address climate change.

  • The 1st barrier - permitting.

  • The 2nd barrier - need to add 10M people to the industry in the next 10 years.

The question is - How could you possibly scale? The solution is a complete end-to-end software solution that wraps CRM, proposals, and financing together, but it’s not just software.

Andrew is bringing in service providers to exhibit products, and essentially pulls everything into a single place. He makes that bundle white labeled to installers, as well as accessible and online and completely free.

That’s Open Solar, but there’s so much to Birchy’s story.

284 - How COVID has impacted.png

Welcome back, Solar Warrior!

Coronavirus has drastically changed the global economy with impacts across every industry, including clean energy and solar development. We may have never seen an economic or public health crisis at this scale, but policy, solar and finance experts have reason to believe that renewable energy can weather this storm and continue to grow. Moreover, the industry can help create jobs and meet public policy goals once we return to a new normal.

How can we navigate current challenges, and what can we expect from the future of solar financing and development? To answer those questions, we hosted a marvelous panel with New York State Senator, Kevin Parker, Member and Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Telecommunications; PPL Director – Solar Development, Brian Fratus; Entersolar Business Development Director, Suparna Kadam; ROTH Capital Managing Director, Philip Shen, and RadiantREIT co-founder, Jim Spano.

283 - Jesse.png

Welcome back, Solar Warrior!

COVID-19 has touched every corner of our economy, and guess what? The solar project finance and acquisition space is not the exception. Jesse Grossman, CEO of Soltage, joined us here on SunCast to provide his insights on this concerning area.

Jesse has directed over $600M into solar asset investment through Soltage, which currently owns and manages a solar portfolio of over 300 MWs across 14 states.

The main points of our conversation were how the solar industry has changed since the start of the 2020 pandemic, what small and medium-size solar developers can do to best position their assets for sale in the post-COVID economy, and Jesse’s takeaways from the 2007-2009 recession that can help solar developers today.

Welcome back, Solar Warrior!

Are you interested in the way the EV infrastructure of our industry is growing and expanding? Are you eager to know how some of the key largest companies in the world are thinking about it?

We’ve been extending into e-mobility and energy storage as you might have noticed in our recent episodes. Both elements serve the collective consciousness of how low-carbon future for the grid can be achieved, as well as mas penetration of renewables as a whole. In this episode, we go down an interesting pathway and cover how electrification of the automobile industry is driving the adoption of technology, hardware, software, and pulling the renewable energy industry forward in many ways.

Today’s entrepreneur is Giovanni Bertolino, Head of E-Mobility for U.S. and Canada at Enel X. We are going to tease out what’s happening in the market from their mobility-business representative. He’s focused on growing the Residential and Commercial smart charging business, and he’s been serving Enel X and others in the utility sector for a long time.

280 - How is Energy Storage driving innovation in renewables? [SunCast Clean Energy Summit]

280 - SunCastSummit storage session (4 guests).png

Hey there, Solar Warrior!

From residential to large-scale utility projects, energy storage (predominantly in the form of batteries) is leap-frogging other applications for finally providing firm and transactive power to the grid from renewables.

How are developers using storage as a force-multiplier and where can we expect to see further business model innovation? We had the pleasure to break this question down with Jacqueline DeRosa, Vice President Battery Energy Storage Systems of Ameresco, Omeed Badkoobeh, Co-Founder & CEO of Yotta Energy, Marek Kubik, Market Director of Fluence in the UK, and Zach Ward, Head of North America Division of Sungrow USA Corporation.
