Can we just agree that authenticity and empathy are worthy buzz words?  Rain Bennett is a movie maker, an author and a public speaker….well, actually, we should add Emmy-nominated producer and TEDx speaker.  And every time, through every channel, he gets your attention with authenticity and empathy because that’s what matters to people.  He’s built a career on storytelling and I’ve brought him on the show today to talk about why that matters to your professional development.

In a world dominated by “six-second stories,” how do you stand out???

In his recent TED Talk, “You Don’t Get Hired for Your Expertise,” Rain breaks down how to not get caught playing the wrong game, and he does this in a very personal and compelling way.

Everyone’s contribution to the world is unique, each one of us has an advantage.  Rain tells the story of how Mike Tyson, discouraged that the “great” heavyweight boxers have vertical advantage and longer reach, found his unique advantage in the bob and weave technique that propelled him to Champion.  Comparing yourself to others in your industry and competing without leaning into (or understanding) your core skills often creates a scarcity mindset.  We talk about holding on to moments of success as a way to build confidence and staying clear-headed and focused on your true and critical part of the puzzle.

Rain is an accomplished film producer and storyteller, and every presentation he gives is engaging and memorable.  But how does he do it?  How does he grab our attention and hold it until the message is clear?

This episode highlights his field-tested approach.

It’s so good he’s distilled it into a book, but guess what, the book isn’t out yet!  Luckily you have SunCast and can listen to it instead, but I’m sure you’ll want to pre-order “Six Second Stories” or pick it up next week when it’s available (see link below).
